The Wei-zang Chien Award is awarded by ICCES (International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences) and the Tech Science Press to researchers who have made significant technological innovations and breakthroughs in the field of Mechanics.
The recipient of the 2019 The Wei-zang Chien Award is
Professor Wen-Hwa Chen,
Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professor,
National Tsing Hua University
For his
”sustained contributions to computational mechanics for over 45 years, and for his unparalleled efforts in institution building at the National Tsing Hua University and at Taiwan’s National Applied Research Labs“
Professor Chen received his B.S.E degree from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, R.O.C. (1971) and the Ph.D. degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, U.S.A. (1977), both in Engineering Science and Mechanics. After Professor Chen’s graduation, he returned to Taiwan and has been working in National Tsing Hua University for more than forty years.
Professor Chen has published more than 260 archive journal articles and conference papers in the field of Applied Mechanics (Fracture Mechanics, Contact Mechanics, Acoustics Control, Electronic Packaging and Nano/Micro Mechanics). He holds 19 Taiwan/Mainland China/U.S.A. patents in Acoustics Control, Electronic Packaging and DRAM Technologies. He received many outstanding research achievement awards, including Distinguished Research Awards from National Science Council, R.O.C. (1983-2001), Dr. Sun Yet-Sen Academic Award(1986), the ICCES 1995 T.H.H. Pian Medal, the Sun Fong-Dou Mechanics Medal from the Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, R.O.C. (STAM) (2000), the Academic Achievement Award in Engineering and Applied Sciences (2002) and the National Chair Professorship from the Ministry of Education, R.O.C. , the Mechanical Engineering Medal from the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering, R.O.C. (CSME) (2011), the C. C. Yu Mechanics Medal from STAM (2012), the ICCES 2013 life-time Achievement Award, and the Science Profession Medal from the National Science Council, R.O.C. (2013) etc.
In addition to his continuing active research work, Professor Chen also served as the Department Head in Power Mechanical Engineering (1981-1988), the Chairman of the University Committee of Research and Development (1988-1992), the Dean of College of Engineering (1992-1998), the Vice-President of Academic Affairs (2002-2006), the Vice-Chancellor of the University System of Taiwan (2008-2009), the President of National Applied Research Laboratories (2009-2012), (in which capacity, Professor Chen supervises 11 National Laboratories/ Research Centers in various high-technology disciplines, including the National Space Organization, the National Center for Research in Earthquake Engineering, the National Nano Device Laboratories, the Taiwan Ocean Research Institute, and the National High Performance Computing Center, etc.), and the Consultant, Science and Technology Forum, Presidential Office, R.O.C.(2010-2012). Currently, he is appointed as the Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professor from the Department of Power Mechanical Engineering, National Tsing Hua University (2008- ).
Professor Chen has served as the editor/associate editor/ editor-in-chief of many prestigious local and international journals, including the Chinese Jnl. of Mechanics, Computational Mechanics and Computer Modeling in Engineering and Sciences etc. Professor Chen was also elected as the fellows of ASME (2003), STAM (2006) and CSME (2007) and the full member of International Academy of Engineering, Russia (2014).
